Late Victorian famine crises

World history · Culture · Politics

The major hunger crises of 1875–1878 and 1896–1902 coincided with extensive droughts linked to climate variability, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. Deaths and suffering cannot be attributed to climate alone: colonial policies, markets, war, food access, and local responses decisively shaped their effects.
