Tercio: pike-and-shot combination
War & military technology · Infantería · Picas y mosquetes · Formaciones · Doctrina
The sixteenth-century Spanish tercio combined a compact core of pikemen with arquebusiers and musketeers, seeking mutual protection and support between firearms and pikes. Its composition, size, and performance changed among armies and decades; it was not an unchanging formation and does not show European tactics automatically replacing other military practices of the period.
