Hoplite phalanx in Greek poleis
War & military technology · Infantería · Formaciones · Doctrina · Polis
In Greek poleis, the hoplite phalanx organized heavy infantry with spears in a compact formation and remained a central unit for centuries; archers, light troops, and, to a lesser extent, cavalry also formed part of warfare. This periodization does not assign the formation to one city or present it as a universal or automatically superior tactic.
