Catalan Atlas: routes, power, and cosmography
Oceans, navigation & cartography · Nautical cartography · Empire, trade & power
The atlas attributed to the Jewish Majorcan cartographer Abraham Cresques combined portolan techniques with geographic, political, economic, and legendary information about the known world. It was a courtly cosmography rather than simply a shipboard chart, showing how maps and patronage organized knowledge and power.
