Medieval fairs, bills, and payment netting
Money, banking & finance · Crédito y comercio
At medieval trade fairs, credits and debts could be entered in accounts and netted before balances were settled in specie; bills of exchange helped move payments between locations. These techniques reduced physical transport and settlement costs in specific settings, but depended on merchant networks, trust, and local rules, not on a unified European banking system.
