Cross-border sovereign bonds and 1820s suspensions
Money, banking & finance · Deuda soberana y mercados internacionales
During the 1820s, newly independent Latin American states and other borrowers issued bonds in European financial centres, largely denominated in foreign currency. Payment suspensions soon followed and were numerous. The process shows how an early international sovereign-loan market worked, not a rule that new states or foreign borrowing inevitably lead to default.
