Māori rangatira and the British Crown signed te reo Māori and English texts that are not equivalent: “kawanatanga” and “rangatiratanga” do not map without remainder onto English “sovereignty.” Record the treaty as an agreement with contested interpretations and consequences, not an unequivocal cession or final resolution of Māori claims.
