New Laws of the Indies
Law & constitutions · Derecho colonial, administración y trabajo
Charles V promulgated the New Laws in 1542–1543 in response to reports of abuse and to strengthen Crown control over encomienda and colonial government. Their provisions met resistance and were amended or unevenly applied; they did not end colonial exploitation or constitute universal rights.
