French abolition of 1794 and restoration of slavery

Law & constitutions · Abolición, esclavitud y derecho colonial

The Convention abolished slavery in French colonies in 1794, but implementation was uneven and Bonaparte restored slavery and the trade in several territories through the 1802 law. The episode shows that legislative abolition can be partial, reversible, and contested.
