Operational transatlantic telegraph cable

Information & communication · Technology · Infrastructure

After several failed attempts, the 1866 cable operationally connected Ireland and Newfoundland and reduced messages that had traveled for days by ship to minutes. It was costly, fragile infrastructure initially oriented toward states, news, and business, not universal or instantaneous communication for everyone.
