From penicillin observation to therapeutic production
Epidemics & public health · Antibióticos · Infecciones bacterianas
Fleming observed a mould’s antibacterial effect in 1928; other teams developed its isolation, clinical testing, and large-scale production during the 1940s. Penicillin transformed treatment for certain bacterial infections, not viral diseases, and its deployment also opened issues of access, appropriate use, and antimicrobial resistance.
