1997 CE
Kyoto Protocol and energy-related market mechanisms
Energy · Technology · Infrastructure
The Kyoto Protocol was adopted in 1997 and entered into force in 2005. For energy systems, it made reduction targets binding for covered industrialised Parties and created mechanisms such as emissions trading, joint implementation, and the Clean Development Mechanism. It was an accounting-and-incentive framework, not a guarantee of technological substitution or uniform outcomes across countries.
