Scale-up of batteries for electricity grids

Energy · Technology · Infrastructure

Cost and performance improvements in lithium-ion batteries allowed storage to move from a niche to a grid-flexibility resource. In 2023, 42 GW of battery storage was added to the global power sector, across grid-scale projects, behind-the-meter systems, mini-grids, and solar home systems. Batteries help with short-duration services and stability, but do not by themselves replace transmission, firm generation, demand management, or resilient supply chains.
