Creation of Albert National Park (now Virunga)

Climate & environment · Áreas protegidas · Conservación · Conservación colonial

In 1925, Albert National Park—now Virunga—was created in the then Belgian Congo to protect mountain gorillas and other Albertine Rift environments; UNESCO describes it as Africa’s first park. It was a conservation measure instituted under colonial administration. That context means early African parks should not be presented as politically neutral precedents: relations of access, authority, and land require situated historical analysis.
