Second council in tradition
Religion · Buddhist traditions · Canon and monasticism
The Theravada chronology places the Vaishali council one hundred years after the Buddha’s death. The dates 444 or 380 BCE are derived from that rule and its two alternative death dates. Disciplinary accounts vary across lineages.
