1968 CE
Mauritius attains independence without the Chagos Archipelago
British Empire · Colonization & sovereignty · Resistance & colonized agency · Self-government & Commonwealth · Decolonization & independence
Mauritius became independent on 12 March 1968 under a government led by Seewoosagur Ramgoolam. The Mauritius Independence Act ended British responsibility and established fully responsible status within the Commonwealth. Yet the United Kingdom had detached Chagos from the colony in 1965 to create the British Indian Ocean Territory. This entry holds the two facts together without conflating them: it recognizes Mauritian sovereignty in 1968 while making visible the decolonization dispute left unresolved
